I took a photograph of a magnolia tree near the MCA, my only spring in Chicago, its white petals bowed slenderly as a variety I’d never seen before. Close to the Lake but because of the upward curved bridge, I could not see where its blue became silver.
When my wishes were always the same, I tossed silver quarters into fountains. In the water, the coin bloomed like a magnolia but that is all I’d ever see. Now I make bridges to the wishes I want to happen, like Chicago on long weekends. I still write by the Lake as I did every day po
